Wild Grapes (Isaiah 5:4–5)

Wild Grapes (Isaiah 5:4–5)

Isaiah 5:4–5 asks a question that stays with me: after all the care given to the vineyard, why did it bring forth wild grapes? This song sits with that picture and the sadness of seeing what was loved and tended turn out differently than hoped. It gives us room to think about the care the LORD has shown us, and about the fruit our own lives are bearing.

Lyrics

What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?
